Xiaomi Announces MIUI 12.5: New Features and Supported Phones

At the launch event of the Xiaomi Mi 11, Xiaomi announced a new massive update to its Android skin with MIUI 12.5, along with a list of devices that can start testing MIUI 12.5 beta.

Xiaomi is clarifying that the update may sound like a minor iteration of MIUI 12, but it will get a huge UI upgrade and will power Xiaomi smartphones in 2021.

New MIUI 12.5 features

The new MIUI 12.5 update comes with several improvements, especially in the UX department. Also, there are privacy improvements and changes in the way MIUI interacts with Windows.

Snow Mountain and Geometry Live Super Wallpaper

Super wallpaper is one of the biggest features of MIUI 12. Back when MIUI 12 first arrived, Xiaomi introduced the Earth and Mars super wallpaper. Recently, the Chinese smartphone company also presented the Saturn super wallpaper.

With the MIUI 12.5 update, Xiaomi has now presented two more new super wallpapers — Snow Mountain and Geometry live wallpaper.

Snow Mountain Live Wallpaper

Geometry Live Wallpaper

Apart from Snow Mountain, MIUI 12.5 has also managed to port the Geometry Live Wallpaper to any Android 8.0+ device!

First, the Geometry Super Wallpaper: Two versions are available, always Bright and always Dark version. The Bright wallpaper features a set of moving geometric shapes with varied colors and transparencies on top of a light blue background.

The always Dark version features a darker background with a bit less colorful looking geometric shapes, which still move at the same time as you swipe your finger across your desktop or when you unlock your device.

Thanks to developer linuxct, you can sideload MIUI 12.5 Snow Mountain and Super Geometry wallpapers on any Android device.

Changes in UI

According to Xiaomi, the new version of MIUI 12 comes with a smaller number of pre-installed apps compared to other Android skins. Xiaomi compares MIUI 12.5 with iOS 14, EMUI 11, Color OS 11, and Funtouch OS 10.5.

MIUI 12.5 comes with new animations and transitions. Xiaomi says the MIUI 12.5 interface is now as good as the iOS 14 interface.

Apart from that, there are changes to the Xiaomi Notes application. First, there’s a new Notes app icon. Secondly, there are some new features in the Notes app such as the ability to create indent lists, brain maps, draw, and doodle, etc.

In MIUI 12, Xiaomi added nature-inspired sounds that can be applied as ringtones and message tones. In the new update, Xiaomi has added new sounds of nature-inspired from places in Amazon, Australia, the Arctic, and Africa.

System enhancements

Xiaomi claims there is a big improvement on the back end, and therefore MIUI 12.5 is highly optimized to provide more performance while consuming less battery.

The latest MIUI 12.5 uses 32% less memory and 17% less power. Also, there is a 20% decrease in memory usage in core usage situations. On top of that, background memory usage has been decreased by an average of 35%.

MIUI 12 Super Wallpaper, which is known to take up high battery consumption, will now consume 40% less power.

MIUI and Windows integration (MIUI+)

Xiaomi has introduced a new service called MIUI+. This is similar to how Microsoft’s Your Phone app allows users to view the activity of their Android device on a PC.

With the help of MIUI+ in MIUI 12.5, Xiaomi users will be able to view mobile notifications on PC. The service will also support a universal clipboard where users can copy content from Xiaomi devices and paste it directly on their Windows PC.

Xiaomi fans will also be able to access files on their Xiaomi device as well as access the clicked screenshot instantly.

As of now, below are the Xiaomi devices that will provide MIUI+ services:

  • Mi 10 Ultra
  • Mi 10 Pro
  • Mi 10
  • Mi 9 Pro 5G
  • Mi 9
  • Redmi K30 Ultra

Privacy Changes

Xiaomi has also introduced some big privacy enhancements with MIUI 12.5. In the latest MIUI update, Xiaomi and Redmi users will be able to send rough location instead of exact location when asked by the app. Since most of the apps don’t need precise location data, this will help in maintaining user privacy.

Another big change is the way the app accesses clipboard data. For apps that try to access clipboard data, you now have the option to grant or deny their request.
